The long road from Winterfell to King’s Landing made it clear to Ser Edric that he needed to occupy his time with something beyond just idle thoughts and dreams of glory.
Before departing for his new position with the Gold Cloaks he sought out Maester Garrold as he knew the old man’s library was packed full of interesting books that he could read during his travels.
After learning about the tournament that was called for following the wedding of the two Dragons, Edric thought that learning more about the joust would be in his best interest. He has always been a dominant force in the tourney melees but the real fame came from winning the joust. While his skills in lances and animal handling were not terrible, they needed to improve substantially if he wished to join the jousting lists.
After perusing the Maester’s library for an hour or two he came across a book named “Tournament Strategy: Lances, Saddles and Tourney Horses”.
“Perfect.” Edric thought. “I will gain some insight into tournament strategy during my travels and hopefully use this to my advantage in the lists.”
He brought the book to Maester Garrold to get his permission to bring it with him to King’s Landing.
“Of course, Ser Edric! That old dusty thing won’t be needed by anyone in Winterfell. Take it for as long as you need!” the Maester exclaimed.
“Thank you Maester Garrold. I will take care not to ruin the book. We know how you cherish your library.”

The next morning Lord Wilhelm’s retinue left to begin their journey to the Crownlands with Ser Edric and Ser Aemon in tow behind. Edric could not wait to start reading his new book and tried to do so while in the saddle. All this accomplished was making him sick during the ride however.
Noticing Edric turning a colour of green to match his coat, Ser Aemon mentions “Perhaps you should save the book for bedside reading Ser Edric?”
Edric agreed and put the book away until the evening. The sickness quickly passesd as they made their way down the Kings Road. Edric noted how peaceful the Kings Road had become since the Red Priests had left. “The bandits seem to have made their way to the coast for the Second Sons to cut down. We will make good time to Kings Landing.” Ser Aemon said.
Chapter by chapter during the long journey Edric was learning more than he had expected. How to properly couch the lance, the best grip to use, selecting a horse ideal for the joust. So much information that his northern education had skipped over as the northern lords did not fuss too much with tournaments.
With each passing day Edric was becoming more and more confident in his jousting skills. There was even a chapter designated to helping men of smaller stature, like himself, to gain the same strength in their lancing arm while simultaneously becoming a smaller target to un-horse. The book was proving to be invaluable. Edric decided to take a look at the name of the author. To his amazement the book was written by none other than Barristan Selmy, aka Barristan the Bold. Former Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and the champion of many tournaments in his era.
“Perhaps I do have a chance to win the purse…” he thought as he dozed off to sleep.
