Nestor, Jory, and Donnel Coppers are out for a ride through the forest outside of Clegane’s Keep. It is early morning, which is the time the three of them normally head out for a ride. The cool air and dew on the ground make for a very scenic route. They converse about different things, but most of the time Nestor and Donnel discuss the financial part of being a landed knight. Those conversations always bore Jory. Jory will never hold land, which is for his older brothers, he dreams of the Kingsguard.
They ride further, and Jory’s boredom makes him look to the sky. He watches as he sees a hawk soaring above the trees, seemingly circling around something. Jory rides forward, keeping his eyes on the hawk, hoping that this horse will guide itself for the time being. He sees it dart down from the sky, downward toward some bushes.
He’s got something
The cry that Jory hears is not what he expects. The sound is from the Hawk and not from some unsuspecting animal on the ground. He sees the hawk try to fly back up into the sky, and a large golden paw flash up from the bushes. The horses rear at that moment, and the lion jumps out.
“Ser Nestor a lion ahead!” Jory yells.
“I see it boy!” Nestor calls back, and at that moment he urges his horse forward and takes his warhammer out from his back.
Jory watches as he sees the hawk fall to the ground and the lion leap for it. Jory closes his eyes, as he has always liked hawks, but when he opens them he does not find that the hawk is dead, instead he finds that Nestor has knocked the lion away with his hammer and the beast has run off from the group of men. The hawk flies up to the top of a nearby tree and seemingly drops on a branch and stops moving. Jory stares in surprise and jumps off of his horse, running to a tree with low branches.
“Boy, what do you think you’re doing?” Nestor calls over to him.
“The hawk… We should help it.” Jory replies as he pulls himself up on a branch.
“The hawk is at the top of a tree don’t be foolish.”
Jory ignores Nestor and continues to climb and climb. He is on the wrong tree though, and the one he is climbing is a few trees over, it just so happened to have the sturdiest low branches. So as he climbs Jory jumps and swings to transfer onto closer trees as the branches start to become stronger on closer trees. Jory keeps going and going, almost losing sight of the ground.
Once he reaches the top he makes his final transfer over to where the hawk is laying.
It is young, a very young hawk.
Jory takes off his tunic, and wraps the hawk in it and ties the tunic to his back. Jory makes the slow decent down the trees, once again having to swing or jump from branch to branch. When he makes it to the bottom Nestor just shakes his head.
“Can you heal him, Ser?” Jory asks, as he unwraps the hawk.
“Not here, we can take it back to the keep.” Nestor replies.
That is exactly what they do. The three of them ride straight back to the Keep, not wanting to be out riding anymore due to the lion anyway, and take the hawk to Nestor’s chambers.
“Put him on the table, and I’ll take a look at it.” Nestor commands.
Jory does as he is bid, lying the hawk down on its back with the hawk’s wings spread out. Nestor then walks to the table and examines the bird.
“His wings have lacerations on them; best I can do is put some ointment on them and wrap the wings.” Nestor concludes.
Jory’s face brightens up just by the fact that Nestor can do anything for the hawk. Nestor sees the smile on Jory’s face and begins to apply the ointment and wrap the wings with cloth.
“The hawk will try to fly regardless. It will be scared also, so when it wakes you must be careful. The bird is now your responsibility.”
Nestor says as he gets back up and moves away from the bird.

Jory continues to take care of the bird, and Nestor applies more ointment every so often and checks the wounds to make sure that they are in fact healing and not festering. Over time the hawk returns to its full strength, but by now the hawk and Jory have become attached to each other.
