"I am glad to see that you are enjoying yourself, Aelinor."
"A cat! Shadowcat, you mean?" Lorraine shivered. "But just a small one?" She looked over at it. The largish head and paws made it seem young. "Just a baby, is it?"

"A cub, nothing more. I did not want to kill something so young, but it came out of the brush, scenting the deer. I did not think, I'm sorry to say. It did not seem interested in me, but my arrow left the bow before I thought." Felric looked up at her "This one did not have the chance to know its strength. Its lesson was harsh, and unforgiving. But that is the way of the wild. "

"Poor thing." She reached out and touched its fur. Soft. "What will you do with it, Master Crowl?"

"I don't know honestly. I'll ask the huntsman at the castle I suppose, and they'll probably skin the pelt if I give them the doe... boots maybe? Or gloves? It seems like warm fur." A smile touched his tired eyes "would the lady Lannister desire such gloves?"

"Me?" She blinked. "Perhaps I would, especially as we go further north, but wouldn't you need such things for yourself?"

A smile then "How cold do you think it is right now my Lady?"

"If it were only a little colder, I could see my breath in the air, I feel sure of it. Why do you ask? Surely you can feel it yourself?"

"Where I come from there is ice year around, and you can see your breathe every day. It covers the stones, hides them beneath its cushion. The chill in this air is weak, and small. Your body can fight it and win. When it hurts to breathe my lady, that is when you know the cold has come. That is Winter, when the very air you draw in turns to ice. You will feel it as we move farther north. Even in summer, the snows fall in my lands and my breathe steams year around." Felric looked down "it is no place for soft people."

Lorraine had never felt a cold like that before. A shudder ran down her spine at the thought of it. "But how far north do you live that ice covers everything? I know there are trees, tall ones, and game at Winterfell. Surely most animals couldn't survive in cold like that Not even wolves."

"There are lands farther north than Winterfell my lady." He smiled sadly "And it is true most animals cannot survive long in these lands." He remembered the six bodies, frozen around the dead fire. The human leg still over the dead coals. "But beasts and terrors live on in the cold. What do you know of the Wall, and the men who guard it?"

"I know only what you told me of the Wall, and the stories that surround it. I know that it is higher than the highest mountain and taller than the tallest tree." She thought a moment. "What is the place you are from called?"

"Called?" Felric hesitated. How much could he tell? What stories did they tell? Skag, stoneman, cannibal. All were names associated with Skagos. "It is called the land of... stone. Rocky hills, but white beaches when the rare thaw comes. It's a desolate place. You do not wish to go there, I can assure you. And you Lady Lion, where do you hail from?" Felric asked with a sudden smile, trying to turn the conversation away from him. "The westerlands, what are they like?"

"The land of stone? I haven't heard of it. You must be very far north indeed." She tried to imagine a place where it was nought but ice...forever. She tried to imagine never being warm. She couldn't.
"I'm not from the westerlands, didn't you know? In fact, I have never been there. I was born a Tully of Riverrun."

"Is it warm there?" Felric whispered. It was going to be hard to go north again. To be in that place when you knew no other, that was necessity. To return... that was hard. Much harder than he thought it would be.

"Most of the time, it is. But in the winter, we have seen snow. The water...not the river, but the lakes and ponds and puddles, they all freeze over. It is beautiful." She looked happy, nostalgic even. "I miss it. Do you miss your home, Master Crowl?"
